Trigger Point Injections

Trigger points are sensitive areas of tight muscle knots that form after injury or overuse. The most common places to find trigger points are your upper back and shoulders, and the pain can radiate across your neck, shoulders, and head. Because these knots are unable to relax by themselves, they often create significant pain that requires medical intervention. Trigger point injections help relieve pain by breaking up muscle knots and the surrounding scar tissue with steroids, a local anesthetic, or a combination of both

What conditions do they treat?

Trigger points can form on their own after injury or consistent muscle strain, but they are also associated with a few medical conditions, including:
  • Tension headaches
  • Myofascial pain syndrome
  • Fibromyalgia

Injections typically resolve trigger points, but they may return if you have a chronic condition.

Are trigger point injections right for me?

If your pain doesn’t improve with spinal manipulation, joint manipulation, or physical rehabilitation, then your provider may recommend trigger point injections. The procedure has a very low risk of complications, but you may feel soreness or numbness in the injection site for a short period of time afterwards.

The healthcare professionals at Blue Diamond Physical Medicine can determine if you are a candidate for trigger point injections. Your provider will work with you to find the most effective treatments for optimal pain relief, including other non-surgical options.
